About

The original inn building, established in 1842 by John Veitch, was the very first structure in Buninyong. A significant moment in the area’s history occurred on August 3, 1851, when gold was discovered in Buninyong.

In 1852, George Selleck became the first post-Gold Rush licensee, naming it Selleck’s Hotel, which later became known as the Crown Hotel. Unfortunately, the building was tragically destroyed by fire on December 31, 1884. The following year, a new two-story structure featuring apricot-colored brick and a multi-gabled roofline was built at a cost of £2,000.

Significant renovations were carried out in 1994, and in 2025, the Coghlan family took over ownership and fully renovated the interiors.

The Crown Hotel Buninyong proudly holds the title of the first inland hotel in Victoria to be issued a license, making it the oldest continually licensed hotel in Regional Victoria. To honor its history, our hotel fox is named George, after George Selleck.

Who the fox are we?

The Buninyong Hotel is proudly owned and operated by local couple Simon and Gorgi Coghlan. With great care and dedication, they have lovingly restored the hotel, creating a warm and inviting space where people can gather, connect, and enjoy delicious meals and drinks while sharing stories.

Passionate about the Buninyong village, its land, and its community, Simon and Gorgi believe the “local pub” should serve as a sanctuary for relaxation—a place for old friends to reconnect and new friendships to blossom.

The Coghlans bring a wealth of experience, having previously restored and operated the award-winning boutique hotel, The Provincial Ballarat, as well as Lola restaurant. Two years ago, they established Bermingham Farm as a venue for workshops focused on art, personal development, and leadership.

With over 30 years of hospitality experience in Ballarat, Simon, alongside Gorgi, is eager to return The Buninyong Hotel to its former glory—a welcoming space the locals can truly call their home away from home.
